Vermiculite is a naturally occuring, non-toxic, soft mica mineral that is heated to high temperature to produce a lightweight, sterile structure.

Absorbs nutrients preventing them from being washed out then releases them gradually to the plants rots.
Good water holding capacity.
Physically assists in assists in aeration and drainage
Insulates against flucutations in surface temperature when used as a seed covering.
